Thinkers and doers
TED conferences bring together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. It started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment and Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events. The “x” means independently organized. TEDxMaastricht has grown to the top 3 TEDx-events in Europe in just two years and was awarded as the most impactful social media event of 2012.
Headlined to “9 Billion and You”, Tedx Maastricht 2013 focused on the challenges of a fast-growing world population by means of food and sustainability.
Need for integrated solutions
The general consensus is that the food production needs to increase between 70 and 100% by 2050.
“And it is not the only challenge. If we are going to increase our food production to feed a growing population, how are we going to do that without contributing even more too energy consumption and CO2 emissions, to water scarcity or to desertification? There is a need for more integrated solutions to face such intertwined challenges: https://www.saharaforestproject.com/concept/challenges.html. With a more integrated approach I am convinced that trends can be turned,” Joakim Hauge said.
The CEO of The Sahara Forest Project presented the technologies: https://www.saharaforestproject.com/concept/technologies.html. He told about the cooperation for the pilot facility in Qatar with the two international fertilizer companies: Qafco and Yara International. Together with Yara and Qafco and extremely ambitious timeline was sat. The Tedx audience learnt how the three partners managed to get the pilot facility up and running before December 2012.
Realizing a restorative growth
“Since the early days of concept development The Sahara Forest Project has been a fantastic journey. It has been amazing to see how this idea has transformed into the reality you see in front of you today. But this has just been the start of our journey. Now we are gearing up to play our part in addressing some of the toughest challenges out there. It will not be easy but I am more convinced than ever that it can be done. I believe that we can realize a restorative growth, CEO Joakim Hauge said.
